Abstract: This article presents a methodology for calculating an indicator of the similarity between occupations in the Brazilian labor market. The indicator is based on information from the Brazilian Occupation Classification (CBO) and uses the syntax of the descriptions of the tasks performed by each occupation. As a result, a continuous similarity index is obtained, ranging from 0 to 1, comparing each pair of occupations. Higher values indicate a greater correspondence of characteristics of the tasks performed between two distinct occupations. The index is non-symmetric, meaning that the effort required for someone employed in occupation A to perform tasks in occupation B may not be the same as the effort required for someone employed in occupation B to perform tasks in occupation A. The index is expected to be useful for a variety of purposes, including analyzing occupational mobility, occupational mismatch, and the impacts of the introduction of new technologies.
