Abstract:
The article describes the experience of Turkey and Hungary in cooperation with IMF during the recent financial and economic recession. It shows that the IMF is playing a signalling role, which is important under the conditions of information asymmetry. The assessment of the quality of economic policy by the Fund influences the decisions of foreign investors whether to invest in it or not, therefore impacts the country’s balance of payments, even without the actual provision of the IMF loan.
