Abstract: In recent years, the demographic issue has captured the world’s attention, with projections indicating that by the end of the century the population will reach a ceiling and begin to decline. However, at present, there are at least two distinct groups of countries, those that will see an increase in their birth rates and those that will not, on the contrary, experience a “demographic winter”. Japan is in the second group, which is why, in this research, we review the demographic challenges it faces; we analyze the context, the factors that explain the phenomenon, the possible consequences and the public policies that are being implemented. The research is of mixed approach and descriptive in scope, it is based on a documentary type research methodology.
