Abstract: This paper analyzes the evolution of the social security system in Uruguay, from the 19th century to the re-institutionalization of the "Banco de Previsión Social" (BPS) in 1986. It is common to consider that the legislation of retirement began in 1896 with the foundation of the first fund; however, we found certain tracks (both in the sources and in the bibliography) that they stimulated to move back in the history to understand the origins of the system. The study of the Uruguayan social security system has a special interest due to the demographic structure of the country and the magnitude of the financial costs as it is the principal public expenditure. On the other hand, the historical approach on the construction of the system is especially interesting, because Uruguay has been considered as one pioneering countries in this matter in Latin America.
