Abstract: The 2003 Report analyses Africa’s trade performance in the context of globalization and growing international trade integration. It examines the structure and composition of African exports, the persistence of commodity dependence and the factors contributing to the continent’s declining share of world trade. The Report assesses the effects of trade liberalization, market access conditions and agricultural policies in developed economies on Africa’s export performance. It also explores the challenges of diversification into higher value-added and more dynamic sectors. The analysis considers both domestic and international determinants of competitiveness and identifies policy measures that can support export diversification, reduce vulnerability to commodity price fluctuations and strengthen Africa’s integration into the global trading system.
