Abstract: The 2002 Report analyses developments in world seaborne trade, shipping markets, fleet ownership and maritime transport services, with particular attention to the position of developing countries within the global maritime economy. It examines trends in cargo movements, merchant fleet development, freight costs and transport efficiency, and assesses their implications for international trade and economic development. A special focus is placed on maritime transport developments in sub-Saharan Africa, including the relationship between transport costs, trade competitiveness and economic performance. The Report highlights challenges associated with aging fleets, limited transport infrastructure and high logistics costs, particularly for landlocked and least developed countries. It also provides statistical evidence on global shipping activity and discusses policy issues affecting maritime transport efficiency, connectivity and competitiveness.
