Abstract: The 2003 Report examines developments in world seaborne trade, shipping markets, port activity and maritime transport services, with particular emphasis on the participation of developing countries. It analyses trends in fleet ownership, productivity, freight rates and container traffic and assesses their implications for trade and economic development. A special focus is devoted to developments in African trade and maritime transport, including shipping services, transport costs and infrastructure constraints. The Report evaluates the relationship between maritime performance and broader economic trends and considers challenges affecting competitiveness and integration into global trade networks. Long-term statistical series are used to compare recent developments with historical patterns, providing a comprehensive assessment of changes in world maritime transport and related services.
