Abstract: The 2004 Report reviews key developments in world maritime transport and analyses their implications for international trade, shipping markets and logistics services. It assesses trends in seaborne trade, fleet productivity, container traffic and maritime infrastructure, with particular attention to the role of developing countries in global shipping. A special focus is placed on Asia, examining the region's growing importance in shipping, shipbuilding, port operations and maritime services. The Report analyses regional trade performance, transport connectivity and logistics efficiency, and considers the challenges faced by landlocked countries in accessing international markets. Issues related to transport costs, port performance and regional competitiveness are discussed within the broader context of globalization and expanding international trade.
