Abstract: The 2005 Report provides a comprehensive assessment of developments in world maritime transport, including seaborne trade, fleet capacity, port activity and freight markets. It analyses trends affecting shipping services and maritime infrastructure, with particular attention to the participation of developing countries in global trade and transport networks. A special focus is devoted to Latin America and the Caribbean, examining regional trade performance, shipping activity and port development following the recovery from earlier economic disruptions. The Report evaluates changes in merchant fleet ownership, container traffic and transport connectivity and considers their implications for competitiveness and economic growth. Particular attention is given to the role of maritime transport in facilitating regional integration and international trade. Extensive statistical data are presented to support analysis of long-term trends in global and regional maritime transport.
