Abstract: The 2006 Report reviews recent developments in world seaborne trade, shipping markets, fleet growth and port activity and assesses their implications for international trade and economic development. Particular attention is given to developments in sub-Saharan Africa, including trends in trade, shipping services, transport costs and maritime infrastructure. The Report analyses changes in fleet composition, freight rates, port throughput and transport efficiency and evaluates their impact on trade competitiveness. It also examines the relationship between transport costs and market access, especially for developing and geographically disadvantaged economies. Drawing on long-term statistical series, the analysis places recent developments within a historical context and highlights structural challenges affecting maritime transport performance. The Report provides evidence-based insights into policies and investments that can enhance maritime connectivity and trade facilitation.
