Abstract: The 2008 Report analyses trends in international seaborne trade, shipping activity, freight markets, port performance and logistics services. It assesses structural and cyclical factors influencing maritime transport and examines their implications for trade, economic growth and development. Particular attention is given to developments in Latin America and the Caribbean, including regional shipping services, port operations and trade patterns. The Report reviews recent changes in container traffic, fleet deployment and transport demand and considers the effects of evolving global economic conditions on maritime industries. Statistical evidence is used to evaluate the performance of shipping markets and transport infrastructure, while the analysis highlights challenges and opportunities related to competitiveness, connectivity and trade facilitation. The Report provides a detailed reference source on maritime transport developments relevant to policymakers, researchers and industry stakeholders.
