Abstract: The 2011 Report reviews developments in world maritime transport and examines the participation of developing countries in maritime businesses and related services. It analyses trends in seaborne trade, fleet expansion, freight markets, port throughput and transport infrastructure, and assesses their implications for economic development and trade competitiveness. A special focus is placed on ownership and participation across maritime sectors, including ship ownership, shipbuilding, ship registration, port operations and seafaring. The Report evaluates the extent to which developing countries are benefiting from growth in global maritime activities and identifies opportunities for expanding participation in higher-value maritime services. It also reviews key legal and regulatory developments affecting international transport. The analysis highlights the importance of maritime industries as a source of income, employment and technological development and discusses factors that influence participation in global maritime value chains.
