Abstract: The 2012 Report analyses developments in international seaborne trade, shipping markets, fleet capacity, freight rates and port activity, with particular emphasis on the sustainability of freight transport systems. It examines the relationship between growing transport demand, energy consumption and environmental impacts and assesses emerging policy responses to these challenges. The Report evaluates trends in shipping supply and demand, transport costs and maritime services while considering the implications of long-term growth in freight movements. A special focus is devoted to sustainable freight transport, including energy efficiency, emissions reduction and financing requirements for environmentally sustainable transport infrastructure. The analysis explores how transport policy, technological innovation and international cooperation can contribute to more sustainable freight systems while maintaining trade connectivity and economic development. Extensive statistical evidence supports the assessment of maritime and transport sector performance.
