Abstract: The 2014 Report examines developments in international maritime transport, shipping markets, ports and logistics services and analyses their implications for trade and economic development. Particular attention is given to the challenges and opportunities facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS), whose economies depend heavily on maritime transport for trade, connectivity and economic activity. The Report reviews trends in seaborne trade, fleet development, freight rates and port operations and evaluates factors affecting transport costs, market access and competitiveness. It examines the particular vulnerabilities of island economies arising from remoteness, limited market size and exposure to external shocks. The analysis considers policy options for improving maritime connectivity, transport efficiency and integration into regional and global trade networks. Extensive statistical information is presented to support the assessment of maritime transport performance and development prospects.
