Abstract: The 2016 Report analyses developments in world seaborne trade, shipping markets, maritime businesses and transport costs in the context of changing global economic conditions. It examines trends in fleet growth, freight rates, ship ownership, shipbuilding, ship recycling and maritime employment, and assesses their implications for trade competitiveness and economic development. A special focus is devoted to the determinants of maritime transport costs and their influence on international trade patterns, market access and participation in global supply chains. The Report evaluates how infrastructure, connectivity, logistics performance, market structure and regulatory frameworks affect transport costs across countries and regions. It also considers the implications of technological innovation, new trade corridors and evolving transport networks for the future of maritime transport and global commerce.
