Abstract: The 2018 Report examines the impact of technological developments on maritime transport, trade and logistics. It analyses recent trends in world seaborne trade, shipping markets, port operations and transport services and assesses how digitalization, automation, electronic commerce and other emerging technologies are reshaping the maritime sector. The Report evaluates opportunities associated with increased efficiency, connectivity and data-driven decision-making, while also considering challenges related to regulation, cybersecurity, skills requirements and technological adoption. It places these developments within the broader context of changing trade patterns, evolving supply chains and shifts in the global economy. Particular attention is given to the implications of technological innovation for developing countries and their ability to participate effectively in international trade. The analysis highlights policy considerations aimed at maximizing the developmental benefits of technological change in maritime transport.
