Abstract: The 2019 Report analyses developments in world maritime trade and shipping during a period of heightened economic uncertainty and structural change. It examines trends in seaborne trade volumes, freight markets, supply-chain organization, fleet deployment and port activity, and assesses their implications for trade and development. A special focus is devoted to environmental sustainability and the transition towards more sustainable shipping practices. The Report considers the effects of climate-related risks, environmental regulations, technological innovation and changing market conditions on the maritime sector. It also evaluates broader transformations affecting global trade, including regionalization of supply chains, shifts in production patterns and the growing role of technology and services. The analysis identifies key policy challenges and opportunities for ensuring that maritime transport remains efficient, resilient and supportive of sustainable economic development.
