Abstract: The 2023 Report examines recent developments in world maritime transport and analyses the transition towards a greener and more inclusive shipping industry. It reviews trends in seaborne trade, freight markets, port activity, fleet deployment and maritime logistics, and assesses their implications for international trade and economic development. A special focus is devoted to the environmental transformation of the maritime sector, including decarbonization efforts, energy transition challenges and the distributional implications of climate-related policies. The Report evaluates how regulatory changes, technological innovation and investment requirements are reshaping shipping and port operations. Particular attention is given to the implications for developing economies, which may face differing capacities to adapt to new environmental standards. The analysis highlights policy options for supporting a transition that advances both environmental objectives and development goals.
