Abstract: The 2024 Report analyses the growing importance of maritime chokepoints and their influence on global trade, shipping connectivity and supply-chain resilience. It examines vulnerabilities associated with major shipping routes, canals, straits and port gateways, and assesses how disruptions at these locations affect seaborne trade, freight costs and transport reliability. The Report reviews developments in world shipping markets, fleet activity, port performance and logistics services, placing recent disruptions within the broader context of geopolitical tensions, climate-related events and evolving trade patterns. Particular attention is given to the implications for developing countries that depend heavily on efficient maritime transport for participation in international trade. The analysis evaluates policy measures aimed at strengthening resilience, improving connectivity and reducing the risks associated with concentrated maritime transport networks.
