United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
No 27, Trade and Development Report from United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
Abstract:
The 2008 Report examines the interaction between commodity prices, international capital flows and the financing of investment in developing economies. It reviews developments in the global economy during a period of rising commodity prices, growing financial instability and increasing uncertainty in international markets. Particular attention is given to the relationship between financial markets and commodity price movements and to the implications of these developments for inflation, investment and economic growth. The Report analyses trends in capital flows, external financing and domestic investment and assesses their contribution to development and structural transformation. It also considers the vulnerabilities created by financial speculation, commodity dependence and volatile external conditions. The analysis highlights policy options for strengthening investment, maintaining macroeconomic stability and supporting long-term development in a changing global environment.
