Abstract: The 2016 Report examines the role of structural transformation in achieving sustained and inclusive growth in developing economies. It analyses recent trends in the global economy, including slower trade growth, declining commodity prices and heightened financial instability, and assesses their implications for development prospects. Particular attention is given to the processes by which labour and resources shift from low-productivity activities into more productive sectors, especially manufacturing and modern services. The Report evaluates the causes of stalled industrialization and premature deindustrialization in many developing countries and considers their consequences for growth, employment and income convergence. It also examines the role of industrial policy, investment and technological upgrading in fostering structural change. The analysis highlights policy approaches capable of supporting productive diversification, employment generation and long-term development.
