Abstract: The 2017 Report examines the persistence of weak global demand, rising inequality and financial fragility in the years following the global financial crisis. It analyses the effects of fiscal austerity, debt accumulation and uneven growth on economic performance and social outcomes across developed and developing economies. Particular attention is given to the relationship between income distribution, public investment and macroeconomic stability. The Report evaluates proposals for a coordinated expansion of public investment and demand management policies as a means of strengthening growth and addressing structural imbalances. It also considers the implications of globalization, financial liberalization and growing political fragmentation for international economic cooperation. The analysis highlights policy options aimed at supporting more inclusive growth, reducing inequality and strengthening the foundations of sustainable development.
