Abstract: The 2018 Report examines the interaction between trade, finance, digital technologies and market concentration in the contemporary global economy. It analyses the persistence of economic imbalances following the financial crisis and assesses the relationship between rising private indebtedness, inequality and financial instability. Particular attention is given to the increasing concentration of economic power in global production networks, financial markets and digital platforms. The Report evaluates how technological change and digitalization are reshaping trade, development opportunities and market structures while also creating new regulatory challenges. It considers the implications of trade tensions, protectionist pressures and weakened multilateral cooperation for global development. The analysis highlights the need for policy and regulatory frameworks that address concentration of market power while supporting inclusive growth and innovation.
