Abstract: The 2011 Report examines the contribution of renewable energy technologies to sustainable development and poverty reduction in developing countries. It analyses the dual challenge of expanding access to modern energy services while reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and mitigating climate change. Particular attention is given to technological, institutional and policy factors affecting the deployment and adoption of renewable energy technologies. The Report evaluates the capabilities required for developing countries to benefit from renewable energy systems and assesses barriers related to finance, technology transfer, infrastructure and regulatory frameworks. It also explores the relationship between energy access, economic development and environmental sustainability. The analysis identifies policy options that can support technological learning, strengthen domestic capabilities and expand the role of renewable energy in national development strategies.
