World Investment Report 2002: Transnational Corporations and Export Competitiveness
United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
No 12, World Investment Report from United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
Abstract:
The 2002 Report examines the relationship between foreign direct investment and export competitiveness in an environment characterized by weakening global economic conditions and declining investment flows. It analyses trends in international production, regional patterns of investment and the changing distribution of FDI among developed, developing and transition economies. Particular attention is given to the contribution of multinational enterprises to export performance, technological upgrading and integration into international markets. The Report evaluates how investment can strengthen export capabilities and assesses the policy conditions needed to maximize related development benefits. The analysis also considers regional differences in investment performance and explores the implications of changing investment patterns for trade and development. Statistical evidence is used to assess the evolving role of FDI in supporting competitiveness and economic growth.
