World Investment Report 2006: FDI from Developing and Transition Economies: Implications for Development
United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
No 16, World Investment Report from United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
Abstract:
The 2006 Report examines the growing role of transnational corporations from developing and transition economies in international investment. It analyses the rise of outward foreign direct investment from these economies, identifies the factors driving firms to expand abroad and evaluates the implications for host and home-country development. Particular attention is given to the emergence of new multinational enterprises as regional and global actors and to their contribution to South-South investment flows. The Report reviews global and regional investment trends and assesses how changes in the geography of investment are reshaping international production. It also considers the policy challenges associated with outward investment, including competitiveness, technology acquisition and development impacts. The analysis highlights the increasing importance of developing-country investors in the global economy and explores policy approaches for maximizing associated development benefits.
