Abstract: This paper discusses the financial education and over-indebtedness relationship. For this, the main formal and informal credit instruments were identified for the Mexican population, showing credit cards and relatives or friends’ loans as the primary sources, respectively. A multinomial logit model was estimated, which evidenced that the high-income urban population has higher financial education and formal credit access. Nonetheless, people with formal credit and high financial education have financial problems. Especially, credit card users overused this instrument, generating over-indebtedness. We concluded that financial education does not imply a stable financial management
