Abstract: The improvement of national competitiveness is often cited as a measure that can increase the attractiveness of a country. In fact, competitiveness seems to have become a general economic buzzword, comprising any policy that allows a country to earn more foreign exchange, and raise productivity and living standards. This chapter will discuss the various definitions and understandings of competitiveness and how competitiveness can be measured. An institutional approach is used to analyse the competitiveness of the GMS countries, drawing from a large amount of data and several indicators, and analysing other aspects related to a competitiveness-conducive institutional environment. Lastly, a number of suggestions are provided on how to improve certain aspects of the countries' competitiveness, and policy recommendations are given.
