Abstract: Will AI-based automation exacerbate inequality and poverty both within and among developing countries? Could the AI revolution trigger a kind of ‘‘Malthusian dynamic†for poorer nations? To explore these questions, we draw on insights from stratification economics, alongside several economic arguments suggesting that AI may impede the economic convergence of developing countries. Our analysis indicates that, in the wake of AI-driven automation, upward mobility within the global macroeconomic hierarchy is likely to become a critical political challenge for both developing and underdeveloped nations. We argue that the benefits of AI-based automation will accrue mainly to a limited group of countries – the most advanced economies and a handful of high-income emerging ones – while, for the rest of the world, the AI revolution may present not a nightmare, but a formidable developmental obstacle.
