Once again about the rising government expenditure on defence: the case of Bulgaria

Abstract: The current paper addresses government expenditures on defence in Bulgaria. Against the backdrop of military conflicts and the growing perception of insecurity worldwide, this growth cannot be surprising. For an extended period after the end of the Cold War, the EU profited from what was largely known as the "peace dividend". Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022, the EU-27 has made rearmament its top priority, while NATO Allies have changed their minimum target — government defence spending should be not 2%, but 5% of GDP by 2035. In this context, it is important that the rising government expenditures in Bulgaria are not a reflection of defence-specific inflation. Instead, their amount should be sufficient so that the government of this country is capable of providing national security by enhancing the combat capability of the Armed Forces.
