Exploring Italian Agritourism: A Model of Sustainable Rural Development

Abstract: This article examines Italian agritourism’s legal and operational framework, focusing on its role as a sustainable model for rural development. It explores the legal challenges and opportunities arising from the integration of agritourism with traditional agricultural practices, particularly in light of recent legislative amendments. The study highlights the sector’s increasing multifunctionality, as agricultural enterprises expand beyond primary production to offer services that support social well-being and environmental conservation. The paper traces the historical evolution of agritourism from its emergence in the 1950s to its formal recognition under Italian law, with particular focus on Article 2135 of the Italian Civil Code, which legally links agritourism to agricultural activities. Special attention is given to the role of regional legislation, notably the Decreto Sostegni-bis, in redefining the criteria that distinguish agritourism from other agricultural enterprises. Additionally, the article examines the diverse services agritourism enterprises provide – including accommodation, catering, educational programs, and recreational activities – which must remain ancillary to core agricultural operations. Sustainability is a key focus, as many agritourism operators increasingly adopt eco-friendly practices such as waste reduction, renewable energy use, and organic farming in response to growing consumer demand for responsible tourism. These initiatives not only promote environmental stewardship but also help preserve rural cultural heritage, positioning agritourism as a vital driver of both economic resilience and ecological sustainability in rural areas.
