Growth performance of the African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Clariidae)

Fishbyte, 1990, vol. 8, issue 2, 17-19

Abstract: The growth performance of a number of wild populations of the African catfish C. gariepinus (Clariidae) was assessed by means of the growth index ╪. The values of ╪ ranged from 2.97 to 3.67 with some of the highest values coming from the coldest lakes, suggesting that this catfish can grow well at relatively low temperatures, unlike many other tropical species. However, there was no relationship between growth and temperature which is also a contrast to other fish species, in which growth rates generally increase as temperature rises.
