Abstract:
This paper is based on research in sub-Saharan Africa, although the conceptual framework developed may be applied in any context. The theoretical section discusses conceptions of people, the division of labour, macro-micro conceived as structure and action, the analytical distinction between system and social integration, macro-micro conceived as impact, emergent properties, hierarchies, interfaces, networks of power, and globalization. Section 3 describes the conceptual framework and Section 4 highlights eight applications. In conclusion, the study of economic functioning and human wellbeing in current conditions requires multi-disciplinarity and attention to four levels of analysis: global, macro, meso and micro. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
