Abstract:
Industrialization has caused significant pollution damage, but the manner in which certain historical environmental problems were overcome provides insight for approaching today's concerns. The efficiency of markets played a key role in that process, and will also be important in an environmentally driven future. Marketoriented mechanisms can optimize pollution control strategies, incorporate energy efficiency and serve to transfer resources from developed to developing economies for environmental purposes. These changes will have considerable implications for political systems in both the developed and developing world.
