Hierarchical processing by human decision‐makers

Abstract: Many geographically distributed systems include both human decision‐makers and a diverse collection of sophisticated hardware/software assets. With the unavoidable errors and distortions in data accumulation, transfer, and presentation, it is difficult to determine the appropriate human role, or even if the decision‐maker is properly filling the assigned role. This paper provides an analytical model of a decision‐maker performing a situation assessment task in a context requiring hierarchical processing. This model is a generalization of the Mission Directed Decision‐maker Model, a simple but formal description of the cognitive dynamics of a decision‐maker engaged in a task requiring situational identification in an environment containing considerable perceptual ambiguity, equivocal measurements, and sudden temporal change. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
