Beneath the Silence: The Hidden Struggles of Occupied Cities

Abstract: This article explores the understudied critical issue of life under military occupation, focusing on Berdiansk (Ukraine), a peaceful resort city now under occupation. While scholarly attention has been directed toward broader military and political consequences, the everyday experiences of people living in occupied cities have largely been overlooked. Berdiansk's transformation under occupation provides a poignant case for examining the phenomenon of “silence” in such cities—what it signifies. The study reveals hidden dynamics of life under occupation through indirect methods like oral interviews, social media analysis, and regional media outlets. This article contributes to urban studies by highlighting the resilience and adaptation strategies of occupied communities. It emphasizes the need for robust global discourse and action to restore sovereignty and revive community and urban life in these silenced cities. 本文探讨了军事占领下生活这一尚未得到充分研究的关键问题, 重点关注了乌克兰别尔江斯克, 一个目前被占领的和平度假城市。虽然学术界的注意力集中在更广泛的军事和政治后果上, 但生活在被占领城市的人们的日常经历却在很大程度上被忽视了。别尔江斯克在占领下的转变提供了一个有力的案例, 让我们可以研究这些城市的“沉默”现象及其意义。这项研究通过口头采访、社交媒体分析和区域媒体等间接方法揭示了被占领下生活的隐藏动态。本文通过强调被占领社区的恢复力和适应策略, 为城市研究做出了贡献。它强调需要强有力的全球话语和行动来恢复主权, 并恢复这些沉默城市的社区和城市生活。 Este artículo explora la cuestión crucial, poco estudiada, de la vida bajo ocupación militar, centrándose en Berdiansk (Ucrania), una apacible ciudad turística actualmente ocupada. Si bien la atención académica se ha centrado en las consecuencias militares y políticas más amplias, las experiencias cotidianas de las personas que viven en ciudades ocupadas se han pasado por alto en gran medida. La transformación de Berdiansk bajo la ocupación ofrece un ejemplo conmovedor para examinar el fenómeno del “silencio” en estas ciudades y su significado. El estudio revela dinámicas ocultas de la vida bajo ocupación mediante métodos indirectos como entrevistas orales, análisis de redes sociales y medios de comunicación regionales. Este artículo contribuye a los estudios urbanos al destacar la resiliencia y las estrategias de adaptación de las comunidades ocupadas. Enfatiza la necesidad de un discurso y una acción globales sólidos para restaurar la soberanía y revitalizar la vida comunitaria y urbana en estas ciudades silenciadas.
