Abstract: The South Pacific developing countries face unique problems and special challenges, many of them caused by geographical factors, in their economic development efforts. Nevertheless, it must be remembered that the peoples of the South Pacific have in the past adapted to their environment and have created societies whose social and cultural values, especially that of a sense of community and mutual obligation, have survived and must continue to be the mainspring of progress.
