Abstract: This retrospective by an early DEA researcher recalls the people, the setting, the formative philosophies, and early implementation experiences with Data Envelopment Analysis. It is a tribute to the founders of DEA, a historical chronicle, and a perspective on the nature and value of this important operations research methodology.
