Abstract:
Fragmentation by surface collision has been studied for the (endohedral) metallofullerene speciesLaC82+andLa2C100+. Three different types of fragment ions are detected: (i) Lanthanum-containing carbon clusters formed by loss ofC2and/or small even-numberedC2nunits, (ii) empty fullerenes${\rm{C}}_{2n}^+$, and (iii) small lanthanum-containing fragmentsLaC2n+withn=0, 1, 2, 3 (andLa2C2n,n=1, 2, forLa2C100+). Possible fragmentation processes are discussed and the results are compared with the surface-induced fragmentation of higher fullerenes.
