Abstract: The adiabatic potential is constructed for use in the description of atomic friction in scanning of the AFM tip above a close-packed lattice in contact operation mode. Comparison is made with the first term of Fourier expansion of the function of two variables possessing the translational symmetry of the lattice. Phenomenological estimation of the value of the friction coefficient is given.
