Abstract:
The spectroscopic properties ofLiKGdF5crystals doped withEr3+orTm3+and codoped withDy3+,Tb3+orSm3+, and ofLiKYF5crystals doped withEr3+orTm3+and codoped withDy3+have been studied under excitation by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation. It has been found that inLiKGdF5crystals doped withEr3+orTm3+the VUV energy absorbed by4f–5dtransitions in theEr3+or theTm3+ion is nearly completely converted into the UV/visible emission. At least in theLiKGdF5:Er3+crystal some part of such a conversion is due to the energy transfer from the5dstate of theEr3+ion to the neighboringGd3+ion as a result of cross-relaxation giving rise to the emission of two UV/visible photons instead of one VUV quantum.LiKGdF5crystals doped withEr3+and codoped withDy3+,Tb3+orSm3+can be considered as promising materials for phosphors excited by VUV radiation from noble gas discharge.
