Abstract: This chapter consists of sections on Introduction, Historical Overview, Indigenous Sámi Entrepreneurship in Finland, The Environment for Entrepreneurship and Toward the Future. Introduction, as follows:The Republic of Finland covers 304,593 square kilometres of land, and encompasses 33,551 square kilometres of inland waters. It shares borders with Norway, Russia, and Sweden. Graves noted, “A third of Finnish territory, the portion known as Lapland, lies almost entirely above the Arctic Circle,” (1968, p. 590). Finland is multicultural, including descendants of a Swedish-speaking elite, as well as indigenous Sámi people.Famous Finnish entrepreneurs include Rudolf Walden (1878–1946) who in 1920 founded Yhtyneet Paperitehtaat Oy, a business that would develop into United Paper Mills, later UPM. With his son, Juuso (1907–1972), he practised paternalistic management, making mill-towns, including Valkeakoski (Exhibit 6.1), models of the industry.
