Strategic Innovation System as Autopoiesis — Innovation in the Semiconductor Industry

Mitsuru Kodama

Chapter 9 in Developing Holistic Strategic Management in the Advanced ICT Era, 2019, pp 399-442 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: The qualitative case studies presented in Chapters 5–8 made it clear that the establishment of a strategic innovation system (SIS) was a common element of companies that demonstrated strategic innovation capabilities (SIC) and achieved sustainable growth. Forming the core of this SIS is a “triad system” made up of “triad strategic communities (SC).” With the exception of the case study of machine tool manufacturer FANUC in Chapter 8, however, the empirical studies presented in this book thus far have been based on static system analyses and have lacked a dynamic analytical viewpoint that included the element of time.As system analysis that includes time, this chapter presents analyses and observations that focus on how a corporate system goes about changing the system itself (structures and processes) on a dynamic time axis. As an analytical approach toward that objective, the chapter presents case studies and new propositions for building an SIS to achieve sustained corporate growth based on the concept of autopoiesis as system theory.
