Abstract:
Regulatory risks are inadvertently heightened when policy (erroneously) perceives business as “innately evil,” as “progressive” advocacies would claim to justify direct actions. Drawing on political economy and guided by the wisdom of its leading thinkers, managers and policy are offered alternative pathways to positively navigate the vagaries of polarised political discourse. These reflections lead policy and firms to harness their respective strengths to enhance individual and societal good. To turn policy aspirations into reality, business can meaningfully contribute and mobilise its resources, when asymmetries in incentives and rewards are reconciled, even when the perceived gaps are only partially bridged. Through tangible, actionable, and achievable strategic initiatives, managers can work with policy to turn ambiguous conditions into arenas of emerging opportunities to create tomorrow’s profitable niches, starting today.
