Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: Navigating Integrity, Governance, and Knowledge Management in the Digital Age

Callie D. Shaw and Kris S. Helge

Chapter 6 in Knowledge Management and Leadership in the AI Era:Harnessing Technology for Innovative Organizations, 2026, pp 121-144 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: This chapter explores the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), knowledge management, and higher education instruction through digital platforms, highlighting both pitfalls and opportunities for faculty and students alike. Students currently use multiple AI tools to create work products for their classes. Many AI detection tools, however, lack the validity and reliability in identifying AI-generated content. This limitation can lead to instances of academic dishonesty, including unclear or blatant plagiarism, without clear mechanisms for holding students accountable. As such, this chapter examines the potential of international AI governance frameworks to guide higher education institutions in addressing these challenges. These AI frameworks can help faculty and administration develop policies and procedures for AI usage and compliance. Additionally, this chapter emphasizes the need for organized knowledge management systems, such as accessible knowledge bases, file structures, and archival tools to store, preserve, audit, and share information about student use of AI tools. Such systems would also support tracking.
