Why Leadership Matters: Driving Success in Project Management and Business

Tereza Raquel Merlo

Chapter 12 in Knowledge Management and Leadership in the AI Era:Harnessing Technology for Innovative Organizations, 2026, pp 247-274 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: This chapter examines the pivotal role of leadership in shaping project management success, emphasizing that effective leadership extends beyond task coordination to directly influence organizational performance and employee well-being. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review, the study highlights how leadership effectiveness impacts every dimension of project execution, including planning, communication, team cohesion, risk management, decision-making, and resource allocation. Positive leadership is characterized by emotional intelligence, inclusivity, empathy, and a clear shared vision, which fosters collaboration, trust, and knowledge-sharing, and ultimately creates an environment that enables innovation and continuous learning. These practices not only strengthen project outcomes but also, more importantly, enhance employee morale, engagement, and retention, thereby reinforcing the organization’s long-term competitiveness. This analysis further identifies critical leadership competencies and strategies, such as cultivating psychological safety, promoting resilience, and aligning project objectives with broader business goals. Ultimately, this work underscores that leadership is not a peripheral element but a central determinant of successful project management, sustainable business performance, and organizational health in today’s dynamic, knowledge- and data-driven environments.
