Algorithmic Leadership: A Bibliometric Analysis of Robot Autonomy’s Impact on Hybrid Team Leadership and Effectiveness

Abstract: The integration of autonomous robots into workplaces is reshaping the nature of teamwork and leadership with the emergence of hybrid teams comprising both humans and robots. In this study, we conduct a field mapping through a bibliometric review to examine the impact of robotic autonomy on the power dynamics and effectiveness of these teams, identifying patterns, trends, and gaps in the existing scientific literature. Systematic searches were conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore databases. The keywords used included “robotic autonomy,” “leadership,” and “hybrid teams,” enabling a quantitative and qualitative analysis of academic output on this subject. The analysis identified the following: prominent trends in the literature concerning shared leadership between humans and robots; challenges related to trust, reliability, and communication within these hybrid teams; and the need to adapt leadership styles and develop performance evaluation metrics for this new team structure. This bibliometric review provides a comprehensive overview of research on robotic autonomy and leadership in hybrid teams, highlighting avenues for future investigation and contributing to the development of more effective leadership strategies in these emerging contexts.
