Piecing Together a Jigsaw Puzzle on Intermittent Internationalisation

Zubair Ali Shahid and Leonie Hallo

Chapter 4 in Contemporary Entrepreneurship Issues in International Business, 2021, pp 93-112 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: Global disruption has forced all types of international firms to take tough decisions to move in and out of international markets. Internationalisation of firms is a complex phenomenon. International businesses are not only dealing with product-market complexities but are also required to develop new ways of understanding the business world by applying principles of knowledge, networks and psychology. Drawing on internationalisation models (intermittent internationalisation theory), network theory, knowledge-based view and entrepreneurial psychology, this chapter reviews the existing literature on international exit and re-entry and explores how the phenomenon of intermittent internationalisation should be explored from multi-theoretical perspectives. The chapter offers a way to move forward by better comprehending the intermittent internationalisation process.
