Rating Batters in Baseball

Leonard C. MacLean and William T. Ziemba

Chapter 3 in Sports Analytics, 2022, pp 25-30 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: In this chapter we evaluate the greatest batters in baseball. We do this several ways using stochastic dominance, by allowing the batters to bat in all nine positions, and finally how many standard deviations their batting average is above that of the average baseball player. This latter idea is used for other sports such as basketball (Chapter 6), hockey (Chapter 8) and NFL football (Chapter 16).
