Abstract: Most Indians are destined to be inherently multilingual – we are a country that speaks at least 780 documented languages. One has to be extremely insensitive to this endemic linguistic diversity to become monolingual in India. I grew up speaking Bengali (my mother tongue) at home in Assam, a state where Assamese is the dominant official language. On the other hand, I studied Assamese at school in my early years and used it to converse with many of my friends, which embedded it as one of my foundation languages.
